Trans Canada Highway closed between Revelstoke and Golden until Thursday for avalanche control

REVELSTOKE, B.C. — One of the main east-west routes through the BC Interior will be closed for at least the next two days.

In an update to Drive BC, the province says the Trans Canada Highway closed down Tuesday afternoon (March 17) between Revelstoke and Golden. It’s not expected to reopen until Thursday.

“For travellers safety, Parks Canada and The Selkirk Avalanche Program have indicated that they will be conducting avalanche control activity…” notes the website. “Conditions suitable for heli-bombing are required so the duration of this and further delays will be dependent on weather.”

In a separate statement, Parks Canada said avalanche control that began on Monday and last until this morning “successfully triggered several large slides that reached the road.”

“Well above forecast precipitation arrived overnight, significantly increasing avalanche hazard,” the statement said.

Additional avalanche control work is now required along the Trans-Canada highway between Revelstoke and Golden.

Forecasters noted the storm that brought a dump of snow to the Interior late Sunday has had a significant impact on snowpack conditions.

“We apologize for the late notice of this but also find ourselves at the mercy Mother Nature,” added Drive BC.
