KAMLOOPS — The ski lifts at Harper Mountain will not run again this winter as the Kamloops-area resort prepares to the turn the page on what’s been a very challenging season.

In statement Saturday (March 14), staff at Harper Mountain say while there was a bit of snow during the week, it was not enough for them to reopen the resort because of the warm weather experienced last weekend.

“The previous weekends warm weather took a toll on the lower elevations of the mountain,” the statement said. “Although the upper elevations still have good snowpack, unfortunately we needed a decent snowfall to safely open.”

Data from Environment Canada shows temperatures in Kamloops reached a balmy 14.8 C last Saturday (March 7) and 14 C on Sunday. Temperatures also topped out at 11.1 C on March 1, 13.4 C on March 3, 13 C on March 5, and 12.5 C on March 6.

Those temperatures led to a third closure at Harper Mountain following previous closures that lasted from Jan. 13 to Jan. 23 and again from Feb. 3 to Feb. 14.

“With the very warm weather in the forecast next week, even after potentially receiving snow Sunday night, it looks like this may very well be a case of too little too late,” the statement from Harper Mountain added.

“We enjoyed the good days we had, and are looking forward to a normal winter next season.”

Over at the Stake Lake ski trails, the Overlander Ski Club is operating for the final weekend of the 2025-26 season. It’s part of its effort to “squeeze out” as many ski days as possible following a six-week closure that lasted Jan. 15 to Feb. 26.

“We have received a couple of inches of snow in the last few days. A couple of groomers went out to test the conditions [Friday, March 13] and had a lovely ski,” a statement from the Overlander Ski Club said. “Expect it to be a bit soft, and a couple of small icy patches.”

Prospective skiers and snowshoers at Stake Lake are asked to are asked to stick to the groomed trails.

“It’s the last weekend to ski for this year, and it’s so wintery and pretty out here,” the statement added.
