13th-ranked Whundas head to provincials with underdog mentality

KAMLOOPS — The Westsyde Whundas are off to the 2026 BC School Sports AA Girls Basketball Provincial Tournament. Their journey included a second-place finish at Okanagans, losing to JL Jackson of Salmon Arm in the final.

It’s a team that relies on its multi-sport athletes for success – every player having their own unique skillset from other sports to help contribute on the court

“We’re not all basketball players,” said Meena Litt, who is in her senior year. “We’re a very athletic team. Fast break, we like to run teams a lot and we can run the whole game. We end up keeping our stamina longer than a lot of other teams can, so that helps us.”

The Whundas head into AA provincials ranked 13th out of 16 teams. It’s a number that doesn’t sit right with the team. In an earlier tournament this year, Westsyde took a victory against Pacific Academy, who are ranked sixth in the provincial tournament. That prior victory was enough to give the girls a little extra motivation heading to Langley.

“I think we definitely want to prove something because we beat the fifth-best team,” said Grade 12 Hudsyn Morrison. “We were ranked fifth for a bit and then we lost to an honorable mention team, which I think definitely brought us down a bit. But I do think we were probably supposed to be ranked a little bit higher. Overall, I think we’ll surprise some people.”

The first test, fourth-ranked Notre Dame Regional Secondary School of Vancouver. The Jugglers are known for being a smaller team that relies on their speed. These two teams have seen each other before when they matched up in juniour. The Whundas got the better of them two years ago.

“We’re up against a pretty tough team,” Morrison added. “Up first we’re up against fourth-ranked, which is going to be tough, but I think we can do it. We’ve beaten that team before in juniour, so I think, hopefully, we’ll be able to win the first game and then after that we’ll just kind of go from there.”

Tip-off between Westsyde and Notre Dame is 4:45 pm Wednesday at the Langley Events Centre. You can find the whole AA tournament draw at the BC High School Basketball website.
