SALMON ARM, B.C. — A series of reported stolen trucks and an overnight hike led to the arrest of a woman in the Shuswap.

Salmon Arm RCMP say a man in Blind Bay reported that he was awoken by the sound of black 2006 Ford F-350 being driving away from his property at around 10:40 p.m. on Feb. 8.

A member of the man’s family then reported they were following the stolen pickup truck eastbound on Blind Bay Road, but police say they were being followed by a grey 2004 F-350 that was later confirmed to have been stolen out of Kamloops.

RCMP say officers caught up with the stolen pickup trucks and the family member. Eventually, a female driver stopped the grey F-350 in the middle of the road and jumped into the black F-350.

According to police, the family member followed the black pickup up a dirt road for several kilometres, against the officers’ orders. After the two vehicles came to a stop, police say the stolen pickup truck reversed into a police vehicle – taking it out of commission – and drove away from the scene.

“Efforts by family or friends to try and stop a stolen vehicle is not something the RCMP condone or recommend,” Cst. Andrew Hodges states in a news release issued Saturday (Feb. 14). “Individuals who engage in this type of action can risk their personal safety and the safety of the community. Thankfully, no officers or family members were injured in this investigation.”

RCMP say the stolen pickup was found stuck in a ditch in Eagle Bay shortly after, where a resident reported that a man and a woman ran up a driveway and stole a 2006 Ford dump truck that was also eventually found abandoned up a forest service road.

Police Dog Services were in the middle of a dog track when officers say they could hear a woman screaming for help in the distance. Just after 2:00 a.m., RCMP say a 9-1-1 call came in from a woman reporting that she believed she had broken her leg after falling down an embankment and into a water stream.

RCMP say they hiked nearly 1.6 kilometres through dense forest and steep terrain, eventually finding the woman. She was arrested for possession of property obtained by crime, theft of motor vehicle, dangerous operation of motor vehicle and assaulting a peace officer with a weapon.

The woman was sent to a local hospital and eventually released from police custody with a court date.

RCMP say a male suspect has been identified. The three stolen vehicles were recovered.
