WolfPack women to host first-ever playoff volleyball series in Kamloops

CALGARY — The Thompson Rivers University women will play a Canada West playoff volleyball game at home for the very first time later this month.

TRU swept the Calgary Dinos 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-19) at the Jack Simpson Gym Saturday (Feb. 14) afternoon to end the regular season with a 14-6 record. The WolfPack leapfrogged Manitoba into fourth place after the Bisons lost in straight sets to the University of Fraser Valley.

The WolfPack will play the 14-6 Bisons in a best-of-three quarter-finals series Feb. 26 to 28 at the TCC. All three games are scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m., and information about tickets will be released at a later date.

“We are excited to host, it’s a new benchmark for our program – something that we’ve never been able to do,” head coach Chad Grimm said. “We’ll be happy to not travel and play in front of our fans and the city of Kamloops. We are looking forward to the support and I know the girls are excited for that.”

“Hosting is great but we want to make sure that we are taking care of business and putting ourselves in the best position possible to be successful in a couple of weeks.”

WolfPack middle Faith Christensen had eight kills on 11 swings to go with three blocks in the final regular season game of her WolfPack career. Maria Dancheva added eight kills, seven blocks and a pair of service aces.

Libby Meldrum also added 32 assists to finish with 725 on the season, the most among all U SPORTS players in Canada.

“It wasn’t super impressive as far as efficient execution and a pretty offensive display but sometimes the name of the game is to just hang on longer than the other team and I think we were able to do that, Grimm said of the game Saturday.

“Any time you are able to go on the road and pick up a couple 3-0 wins you can’t be sad about that so overall I’m happy we got it done in Calgary.”

This is the first time that the TRU women’s volleyball team has made playoffs in three consecutive seasons. This year’s team has also written its name into the record books as they boast the best winning percentage (70 per cent) in a single season.

Ten of TRU’s 14 wins came in straight-sets, the most in a season in program history.

“The girls that have been on this journey for a long time have earned this so I’m really happy for them,” Grimm added.

In men’s volleyball action, the WolfPack were swept 3-0 (23-25, 22-25, 21-25) to end the season at 6-14. The WolfPack needed to win in three or four sets to clinch a Canada West playoff berth.

Parker Bailey led the WolfPack with 13 kills, while middle Daniel Hitchens added seven kills on just 11 swings. Kamloopsian Brandon Johnson also tallied seven digs and 22 successful serve receptions.

“Tough night. We came out strong in the first set and serving errors really cost us,” men’s head coach Pat Hennelly said. ” We needed to get some momentum in the second and couldn’t put it together.”
