Blazers to honour former netminder Devan Dubnyk on March 7

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers have announced plans to honour former goaltender Devan Dubnyk on Legends Night, Saturday, March 7 ahead of a game against the Vancouver Giants.

The 39-year-old Dubnyk will become the 14th player and third goaltender added to the Blazers’ Legends Banner.

Dubnyk posted a 2.69 goals-against average, a .912 save percentage, and a Blazers record 15 shutouts in 192 WHL games over five seasons with the Blazers. He was named the 2004 WHL and CHL Scholastic Player of the Year, and also appeared at the 2004 CHL Top Prospects game.

The six-foot-six goaltender, who was nicknamed “The Giraffe” was picked by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round of the 2004 NHL Draft. He played professional hockey for 16 years and featured in 542 NHL games with Edmonton, Nashville, Minnesota, San Jose and Colorado.

A three-time NHL all-star in 2016, 2017 and 2019, Dubnyk cracked the NHL’s second all-star team in 2015. He also won the 2015 Bill Masterton Trophy, which is awarded to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Dubnyk won a gold medal at the 2006 World Juniors with Team Canada. He also played at the World Championships in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and won a gold with Canada at the 2012 Spengler Cup.

The Blazers say there will be a special pregame presentation ahead of the 6:00 p.m. puck drop on Legends Night. The Blazers will also wear limited-edition Devan Dubnyk warmup jerseys which will be auctioned off to support KidSport Kamloops.

In addition to special giveaways throughout the game, the Blazers say the first 1,500 fans though the door will be given a commemorative Devan Dubnyk photo. Dubnyk will also be signing autographs beside the newly created Legends Wall during the first intermission.

“Legends Night is an incredible opportunity for Blazers fans to celebrate one of the franchise’s most accomplished goaltenders and recognize the lasting impact of Blazers alumni on the hockey world,” a statement from the Blazers said.
