Kamloops RCMP looking for witnesses after Friday hit-and-run leads to serious injuries

KAMLOOPS — Police in Kamloops are asking for help in identifying a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run in a Sahali parking lot last Friday (Feb. 6) evening that left one person with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

Kamloops RCMP say around 6:30 p.m. that evening, a light-coloured SUV drove past two pedestrians who were walking in a parking lot in the 1200-block of Summit Drive – the Columbia Place Shopping Centre – on three occasions. According to the RCMP, the driver also reportedly shouted at the pair of pedestrians.

Carston Turner told CFJC that he and his partner were returning to their vehicle after stopping at the BC Liquor Store and the Save-On-Foods grocery store when the silver SUV drove past them the first time.

He said he was hit by the SUV’s mirror when it passed by them the second time, and that he was “mowed down” when it passed by the third time.

“It took the wind right out of me and I got sucked under the vehicle with my left leg getting wrapped into the tire,” Turner, who wasn’t available for an on-camera interview, said. “I was dragged between five and six feet, somewhere around there, before I was spit out of the vehicle.”

“My leg was in shambles but the vehicle is parked in front of me. The driver was yelling and swearing and as people started to run over…I lost visual of the driver.”

Turner said he was taken to Royal Inland Hospital where he was told that he suffered a compound fracture. He also dislocated his left foot, and sprained both his right knee and his left wrist.

“I’ve had two surgeries already – one to have my foot relocated to my ankle and one to remove bone fragments in my ankle,” Turner, who was discharged from hospital on Saturday, added. “The most recent prognosis was the potential to have to get an ankle fusion which would leave me partially immobilized from playing sports or anything along those line for the rest of my life.”

Turner described the driver as a heavier set man with dark hair and a dark beard who was wearing a buttoned up shirt at the time. He also estimated the vehicle was going about 40 km/h to 50km/h at the time he was hit.

“The vehicle was a silver SUV but we’re trying to reflect on whether it was like a Nissan Rogue or a Murano or some form of a CRV,” he added. “We not were fully uncertain. I mean, it was dark. It all happened very quickly. So we’re really hoping that any video footage would come out, possibly from the RBC or the Beem Credit Union.”

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dana Napier said people with information or video of the incident should call the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) and cite file 2026-3870.

Ed. note: RCMP have corrected the initial news release, which stated the victims shouted at the driver. RCMP now say the driver shouted at the victims.
