PRITCHARD, B.C. — The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) says work on a new water treatment plant in Pritchard is nearing completion.

In a brief statement, the TNRD said the new water treatment plant for the Pritchard Community Water System is expected to be commissioned in March and treated water is expected to begin flowing later in the spring.

“This Water Treatment Plant will dramatically improve water quality for more than 500 residents in Pritchard who receive drinking water from this system,” the TNRD said of its second-largest community water system.

Construction on the Pritchard water treatment plant began in late 2024 after the TNRD awarded a contract to Kamloops-based True Construction valued at just over $6 million. According to the TNRD, the new water treatment plant will be fully grant funded with no tax impact required for residents.

“The TNRD appreciates hard work from staff involved in design, construction, and water system operations to get to this point,” the TNRD added. “We also appreciate the patience of Pritchard customers and look forward to providing improved water quality in the community.”

Work on a new wastewater treatment plant in Pritchard is currently expected to wrap up in 2027. The TNRD is expected to issue a negotiated request for proposal (NRFP) this spring after the project was delayed “due to competing operational priorities.”

The TNRD notes this wastewater treatment plant project will replace aging infrastructure and bring the existing system – which was opened in 1998 – in compliance with Ministry of Environment regulations.

“The wastewater treatment plant facility upgrades are necessary to replace mechanical components that are nearly 30 years old and make improvements to the system to align with Ministry of Environment regulation,” TNRD spokesperson Colton Davies told CFJC.

“A contract for new equipment for the wastewater treatment was awarded in Oct. 2024 and the latest RFP will be for actual construction to retrofit the existing the facility.”

Davies also noted that 82 per cent of the project’s $2.15-million cost will come from grant funding, with the rest coming from sewer system reserve funds.

The TNRD is also in the process of applying for grant funding to built a new water treatment plant in Savona. The new $11-million plant will benefit the Savona Community Water System, which is the largest in the TNRD.
