KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP say some proactive police work led to the arrest of a man in his 40s who was allegedly impersonating a police officer.

Police say members of the Kamloops RCMP Crime Reduction Unit conducted a traffic stop just after 11:00 p.m. on Jan. 29, where they “learned that the alleged driver was prohibited from driving.”

According to police, the man was driving a white GMC truck which was equipped with red and blue lights and a siren. They also say the found body armour that included non-RCMP ‘Police’ and ‘RCMP’ lettering on it.

“Impersonating police is a criminal offence whether it be by false representation, badge, article, uniform or equipment which can pose a significant risk to both public and police safety,” Sgt. Jason Pole of the Kamloops RCMP Crime Reduction Unit said.

“The proactive work of police with this investigation contributes to reducing crime as we continue with our commitment for safer communities.”

Police say they seized weapons, body armour and the vehicle, and they note the man has been released with charges expected to be recommended.

“The Kamloops RCMP would like to remind the public that police will produce proper police identification if you are unsure about the legitimacy of their interactions,” RCMP added, in a statement.

Police say people who have had an encounter with a man with a white GMC truck wearing partial police attire should reach out to the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) and cite file 2026-3010.
