Tranquille Road sewer main project to resume on February 2

KAMLOOPS — Construction on a major sewer main project on Tranquille Road is set to resume next week as crews return from a brief winter break.

The City of Kamloops says work will take place between Crestline Street and Windbreak Street from Monday (Feb. 2) until the late March. That section of Tranquille Road will return to local traffic only with a maximum speed of 30 km/h, down from the current 50 km/h.

“Construction trucks and equipment will be active, as well as equipment from third-party companies,” a statement from the City of Kamloops said, as it urged people to obey the posted speed limit and traffic control personnel.

“Kamloops RCMP are actively monitoring this site and will continue to ticket non-compliant drivers.”

Stage 2 of work will take place between Crestline Street and Southill Street from late March to late May. Stage 3 will take place between Schreiner Street and Southill Street from late May to late August, while Stage 4 will take place between Windbreak Street and Southill Street from late August to the end of the 2026 construction season.

The two-year-long project began in June last year and crews were focused on the section between Crestline Street and Downie Street. While the city previously told CFJC that it did not complete all of the work it had hoped to do before the winter break, the project remains on schedule.

“We’re pretty confident we’ll make it up [in 2026],” Matt Kachel, the city’s infrastructure delivery divisional manager, said in November. “Working in an old corridor like this there’s lots of surprises. We did the best we could with surveying and scoping but doing all the sanitary connections to each property has been a lot of work.”

Just like last year, there will be impacts to residents who live along the Tranquille Road work zone as well as impacts to transit and mail delivery once work resumes next week.

The truck and dangerous goods route along Ord Road will also return and remain in place until the project wraps up.

“We couldn’t do it all in one year – it’s just too big of a project,” Kachel added. “It’s about 2.2 kilometres of sewer main and the nice stuff on top.”

The “nice stuff” which makes up the third phase of the project Tranquille Road includes a number of surface improvements like new sidewalks and a new multi-use path on an “integral” east-west active transportation corridor that was identified in the city’s Transportation Master Plan.

The first phase of the multi-million dollar project along Tranquille Road west of Crestline toward Kamloops Airport was completed in 2017, while the second phase between Southill Street and 12th Street was completed in 2021.

While the Tranquille sewer project was initially estimated to cost around $28 million, about $13 million of which will be funded through a grant, the city says it will now cost around $26 million. Numerous calls to the city for an update on the status of the project and the price have not been returned.
