LOGAN LAKE, B.C. — An Office of the Chief Inspector of Mines investigation report into the Teck Highland Valley Copper (HVC) mine near Logan Lake unearthed an abundance of health, safety and workplace culture problems.

Last summer, data was collected from more than 270 employees anonymously.

The investigation report published in December notes concerns over bullying and harassment, intimidation, threats of violence, racist and sexist comments, equipment and training insufficiencies and dust control.

Persistent union-management tension and perceived inconsistencies in disciplinary practices have weakened trust and psychological safety, according to the report.

United Steelworkers Local 7619 President Kyle Wolff spoke to CFJC on Monday (Jan. 26). A few of his comments are in the attached TV report, with more to follow on Tuesday.

HVC provided a statement to CFJC late Monday afternoon, noting it takes the findings in the report seriously and has been working to strengthen health and safety performance and workplace culture.

Representatives from HVC and United Steelworkers are expected to meet on Thursday.
