A Way Home Kamloops eyes first vehicle as 2025 Campout to End Youth Homelessness raises nearly $60,000

KAMLOOPS — The 2025 Campout to End Youth Homelessness raised just under $60,000 for A Way Home Kamloops. 

While the final fundraising total fell shy of the non-profit organization’s goal of $100,000, A Way Home Kamloops Executive Director Tangie Genshorek says the $59,721 raised from hundreds of donors in Kamloops will cover a large chunk of the cost to purchase the organization’s first company vehicle. 

A Way Home Kamloops is looking to purchase a van to transport clients to events and activities in and around the Kamloops area. 

“We’ve been talking about this van for years,” Genshorek told CFJC Today. “A lot of our Indigenous folks, a lot of their cultural connection pieces are with the surrounding territory and spending time on the land. We’re really anxious to get that vehicle and make sure we can plan some great trips for the spring, summer and fall.”

Since the fundraising campaign concluded, Genshorek says A Way Home Kamloops has had some funders say they would be willing to look at helping the non-profit top up the campout total to get the organization to its goal. Additionally, Genshorek says the agency has been in discussions with Kamloops Ford regarding a potential deal on a van. 

The annual Campout to End Youth Homelessness sees campers spend a night outside in cardboard boxes and sleeping bags, while hearing stories from young people with lived expertise to directly learn what homelessness is like in Kamloops. 

The campout fundraising total was announced as the one-year anniversary of Katherine’s Place on the North Shore approaches. Named after Katherine McParland, A Way Home Kamloops’ late founder, the building provides homes for 39 at-risk youth in Kamloops, providing them with stability and wraparound supports. 

Genshorek says A Way Home Kamloops intends to invite the community for a celebration when the non-profit embarks on its first journey with its van.
