Wind warning reissued for Lytton-area with intermittent gusts of 90 km/h expected Monday

LYTTON, B.C. — A wind warning is back in effect for the Lytton area Monday (Jan. 12), as Environment Canada warns of gusts that could touch 90 km/h in parts of the Fraser Canyon.

The warning was first issued just before 10:00 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 11) night and lifted at 4:40 a.m. Monday. It was reissued just after 8:00 a.m. Monday, and the weather office says people in the area can expect strong southerly 60 km/h winds with intermittent gusts of 90 km/h that may cause damage.

“An atmospheric river over southern British Columbia is giving strong southerly winds to the southern sections of Fraser Canyon,” the warning said. “The winds are expected to ease overnight into Monday morning.”

“Local utility outages are possible. Driving conditions will likely be difficult. High-sided vehicles will be pushed around by the wind.”

Environment Canada also warned of possible damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters.

The latest atmospheric river has also led to a yellow-level rainfall warning for the Hope to Merritt section of the Coquihalla Highway, where between 50 and 70 millimetres of rain is expected to fall by end of day Monday.

A flood warning, as well as several flood watches and high streamflow advisories are also in effect across coastal British Columbia and Haida Gwaii.
