‘Find their community, stick together’; Kamloops Pride reaches out to community in wake of Zafar killing

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops RCMP have issued a warning anybody utilizing dating websites or apps, and in particular men-seeking-men sites, as they say there is a threat to the public.

The warning comes in the wake of a homicide investigation in the death of Muhammad Zafar earlier this week. The homicide and RCMP warning have sent shockwaves through much Kamloops and especially the 2SLGBTQPIA+ community.

“Sometimes it’s hard to tell how seriously we should be taking some recommendations,” said Alyssa Christianson, the president of Kamloops Pride.

“But I definitely think we should be pushing just some online safety tips right now. Kamloops Pride has put out some resources on our website reminding people some general safety tips and linking some other sites with good information.”

Kamloops Pride amplified the RCMP’s warning through their own social media, reminding those in the community to take every precaution when meeting up with somebody you’ve met online. Kamloops Pride also remains open for those possibly new to the local community needing support.

“Any possibility that is targeting a minority community is always really scary,” Christianson added.

“I think the best thing to do is just stay cautious. I know people are getting some anxiety right now and I hope that people can just find their community, stick together, help each other out the best we can.”

Meantime, an online fundraiser has been launched to support Zafar’s family.
