Merritt woman killed this week remembered for caring nature, dedication to 6 children

MERRITT — At 27 years old, Nathan Jarvis is the oldest of six, with his youngest sibling being 14. This week, they suddenly lost their mother — Pamela Jarvis — in an unthinkable tragedy.

“I just want people to know she was the best,” Jarvis told CFJC Today on Friday (Dec. 19).

Ambulance paramedics and RCMP were called out to a Merritt neighbourhood on Tuesday (Dec. 16) where Pamela Jarvis was found with serious injuries. She was transported to hospital, however RCMP say she succumbed to her injuries there. The next day (Dec. 17), her husband, 49-year-old Christopher Jarvis, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

Now, the community is rallying around the Jarvis children.

“She really put her heart and soul into her kids, and her kids meant everything to her,” adds Nathan Jarvis.

Pam Jarvis and her family moved to Merritt in 2009, and her son Nathan says she formed close friendships around the community.

“Anyone who needed anything or needed a hug or a safe space or to be secure anywhere, she was there. No judgments, no questions asked.”

The 45-year-old is described as having a caring nature.

“She also loved her animals. You could say our house was a little bit of a zoo sometimes,” Jarvis recalls fondly. “She had a snake, a guinea pig, she loves her dogs, and her cat.”

But to her kids, Nathan says what stands out about Pam is her dedication to them.

“She spent her free time all through her kids,” he says. “Any sporting event, any concert, any hobby that they liked to do.”

They’re now clinging to those memories as they grieve the loss of their mother.

“I just loved being there to help her. She always called me her packhorse because I was always packing everything around. And I loved it. I loved every minute of it because she loved being there for everybody. And nothing made me feel better than helping my mom.”

Community contributions have been growing and an online fundraising page has been set up to support the Jarvis family as they navigate next steps.

Meantime, the Southeast District Major Crimes Unit is investigating her death. Christopher Jarvis is due back in Kamloops Law Courts on January 6.
