KAMLOOPS — People have begun moving into a renovated apartment building on Cherry Avenue in North Kamloops, more than two years after it was originally scheduled to open.

In a statement to CFJC Today, the Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs said the 42-unit building “is now fully renovated and welcoming residents.” The Thursday (Dec. 18) statement follows earlier reporting from CFJC that residents will begin moving into 435 Cherry Avenue by the end of this year.

“By preserving and upgrading these homes in Kamloops, we’re helping people stay connected in the community they call home,” said B.C. Housing Minister Christine Boyle in a statement. “For many, these homes mean peace of mind. It gives families stability, helps seniors age in place and ensures individuals can stay close to work, school and the supports they rely on.”

BC Housing spent approximately $15.7 million on the fire-damaged building to “preserve affordable housing that might otherwise have been lost to redevelopment.” About $13 million went towards buying the building in 2023, with the remaining $2.9 million going towards renovations.

The provincial government later admitted that renovations and safety upgrades took longer than expected.

“While the project faced challenges during renovations, including addressing fire and water damage and upgrading critical systems, the work is now complete,” said the ministry statement. “These improvements ensure the building is safe, modern and comfortable for tenants.”

Interior Community Services (ICS) will be managing the building which has suites ranging from studios to two-bedrooms. While the building will be home to families, seniors and individuals, at this time its not clear if all of the units are spoken for.

“Our priority is safe, accessible housing and supports that help people thrive,” added ICS CEO Dan Steenburgh in the statement. “This important investment on Kamloops’ North Shore advances our mission of enriching lives and strengthening communities.”
