Kamloops SPCA advising against giving pets as holiday gifts
KAMLOOPS – The Kamloops branch of the BC SPCA is urging potential adopters or pet buyers to not give animals as gifts without the giftee’s prior consent.
“Talk to that person first and check are they ready for a pet? Have they considered what kind of pet they’re interested in? Or what sort of lifestyle do they have that would be a good fit for them and their pets?” Daria Evans, the manager of the BC SPCA’s Kamloops animal centre said. “It’s important to make sure that they are also planning for whatever the pets needs might be in the future.”
If a person wants a pet, Evans says it is always best to see the animal first and then consider all the aspects of owning and taking care of it.
“It’s a wonderful thing to want to adopt and to encourage the people in your life to adopt. However, it is a lifelong commitment for that animal and there are a lot of things to consider,” Evans added. “Vet care is expensive. Food is expensive. As animals age, their needs can change.”
