McNutt house decked out for another year of raising funds for Kamloops hospice

KAMLOOPS – Lights can be seen from the highway and from the roundabout entering the Dallas neighbourhood in Kamloops. The home and yard (5215 Dallas Dr.) of the McNutt family shines with an eye-catching array of holiday lights designed to draw in passersby and, hopefully, donations for the Kamloops Hospice Association.

This year, the easily seen display can also be heard.

“We switched up the lights and it actually goes to the radio,” says Cassie McNutt, who started the fundraiser in 2019. “If you stop by the house and you tune into FM 99.5, then you can connect the Christmas music to the lights and the lights synchronize with that, so it’s super cool.”

In the first two years, money raised went to non-profits in the Kamloops community. In 2021, Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice House became the fundraising focus. Over the years, the McNutt family has raised enough to buy equipment for the hospice and support its operations budget.

“Being able to hear from families of patients who have benefitted from that stuff, it just solidifies the fact of why I’m really doing this,” says McNutt, noting cuddle beds and ceiling have been well received.

McNutt, 19, has until Dec. 19 to reach her goal of $60,000, with $10,000 already raised.

“Honestly, every single person that stops by isn’t just looking at the lights.” McNutt says. “They get to know about hospice and get to learn about what we have in our community and the support that we have for people who are going through the hardest time of their lives.”

Tickets for the 50/50 are available online until Dec. 19. Lights will be on from 4:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
