KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops and District Elizabeth Fry Society has two days left for its first holiday toy drive collection, meant to provide Christmas gifts for women and children who have fled abusive living situations.

The toy drive began on Monday (Dec. 1) and runs until Friday (Dec. 5). People who want to help out are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys to the Elizabeth Fry Society’s downtown location, to help out families leaving domestic violence and abuse.

“Everything will go to our families. We’ll create a little Christmas store. Mom can come in, choose her gifts, take them away and wrap them — and help to give a little bit of normalcy at this time of year that we all take for granted, that I know I take for granted with my kids. We want to give that back to the families who have made the tough decision to leave an abusive relationships,” explains Executive Director Allison Mclaughlan.

Donation drop off is open between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. daily at 827 Seymour Street and on Friday, the final collection day, the Elizabeth Fry Society will also be hosting by-donation Santa photos, along with coffee and donuts.

“I know it’s tough out there for everybody but the community has come together as always and has supported Elizabeth Fry,” notes Mclaughlan, “and I have no words about what that means to me, to the team, to the families. The generosity is overwhelming for all of us at this time of year and you know, you kind of get choked up when you think about it.”
