KAMLOOPS — Dryden Deobald scored his first career WHL goal with less than four minutes to play to lift the Kamloops Blazers to a 7-5 win over the Penticton Vees in a goal filled affair at Sandman Centre Saturday (Nov. 29) night.

The 17-year-old rookie defenceman from Regina broke a third period tie when he redirected a shot from Cooper Moore past Andrew Reyelts in the Vees net to give the Blazers their second win of the weekend, and third in a row.

“I saw it was a 3-2 and decided to join and drive the net, and thankfully got from a pass from [Moore] and was fortunate enough for it to go in,” Deobald said post-game.

Tommy Lafreniere also scored twice and added an assist to extend his point streak to 12 games. Moore, the 19-year-old from Red Deer, finished with a goal and two assists while Josh Evaschesen tallied three assists.

It was a perfect four point weekend for the Blazers as they have now won three of four games on their current five-game home stand. Sporting new orange alternate jerseys, the Blazers played – and won – their first-ever game against the WHL’s newest franchise.

“The guys are stepping up and its played a huge part in our success,” Moore said post-game as the injury-hit Blazers were forced to dress nine forwards and nine defencemen. “I got to give them credit, our D are playing forward and everyone is grinding it out.”

Kamloops led 2-1 after one period, bolstered by goals from Rhett Ravndahl and Andrew Thomson. The Vees scored their first WHL goal at Sandman Centre when Ethan Weber’s point shot from the blue line found its way past Logan Edmonstone.

Jacob Kvasnicka, who missed a breakaway opportunity in the first period, evened the score for Penticton at 2-2 inside the opening minute of the second period.

While Nathan Behm and Brooks DeMars traded goals to make it 3-3, Kamloops would not be denied as goals from Lafrieniere (on the power play) and Moore made it 5-3 after 40 minutes.

The Vees, however, would not go down without a fight as they responded through Nolan Stevenson and Brady Birnie to make it 5-5 midway through the third period.

Five minutes later, Deobald put the Blazers up for good at 16:14 of the final period though Lafreniere made sure of the win with an empty net insurance goal at 17:37.

“We just stayed with it,” Moore said of the effort. “We got a lead early but they fought back. We’ve been through that a couple times this year so we kept playing our game and ended up winning.”

Edmonstone picked up the win for the Blazers with 23 saves on 28 shots. Reyelts stopped 20 of 26 shots he faced in a losing effort.

The 13-10-2-2 Blazers sit fourth in the WHL’s Western Conference with 30 points from 27 games, while the 11-8-3-3 Vees drop to sixth place with 28 points from 25 games.

The Blazers will wrap up their home stand on Friday (Dec. 5) with the annual Teddy Bear Toss game against the Vees. They’ll take make their first trip to Penticton the following night.

Puck drop from Sandman Centre on Friday is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
