COLLINS: How much is too much?

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? That’s the question facing taxpayers regarding the new performing arts centre as we enter the final month of the year. Concerns are being raised about the new costs linked to the downtown location.

When this project was proposed, it was seen as a diamond in the middle of a cluster of restaurants that would be busy with patrons before attending an event. The only venue with that potential is the Fourth Avenue location. The mayor has favoured moving the location somewhere near the end of River Street. A cheaper option, but not really part of the original plan. It’s similar to what has happened with the Sagebrush and, to some extent, the University District.

The cost of the downtown facility has already jumped several million dollars and we aren’t even started. Paying extra costs is already going to hit the pocketbook, so here’s what we have folks. Do we want the pricier spot in the right location, or do we want a top-notch facility that’s at the end of the line and forego the ideal location?

It may not be possible to have it all. Let’s hope we have some movers and shakers who can bring it all together.
