KAMLOOPS — The TRU WolfPack women’s volleyball team took down the reigning national champions in a heavyweight showdown at the Tournament Capital Centre Friday (Nov. 28) night.

Ranked tenth in the nation, the WolfPack women swept the eighth ranked Manitoba Bisons 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-19) to improve to a Canada West-best 9-2. It was TRU’s fifth win in a row.

Keira Gent led the way for TRU with 12 kills, while Rida Erlalelitepe added nine more kills as well as a trio of aces. Hail Ward finished with eight kills while Libby Meldrum racked up 35 assists, three aces, three blocks and seven digs.

“I think we did a good job on the service line, we put them under some pressure and kept them out of system most of the night,” Head Coach Chad Grimm said. “I thought our block and defence did a pretty good job of playing fairly clean.”

“They are missing some weapons and that changes their team for sure. This can be a hard building to come into, it’s kind of big and hollow so I think tomorrow they will come back more like how they did in the third set and play cleaner.”

The WolfPack men also bounced back after dropping the first set to beat the Bisons 3-1 (15-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-22) at the TCC.

Alex Howard finised with a team-high 14 kills on just 25 attacks, while Rylan Ibbetson, Jakob Leinemann, Lincoln Wagner and Parker Bailey all added six kills for TRU. Wagner led the team with seven blocks while Walker Sodaro dished out 35 assists.

Sodaro, the third year setter from Kelowna, is just the sixth WolfPack athlete to pass the 1,000 assist mark in Canada West.

“Things looked pretty dark in the first set, we didn’t have a lot of life but credit to the guys for digging in,” Head Coach Pat Hennelly said.

The win moves the WolfPack men into a Canada West playoff position with a 3-8 record. They sit ninth in the standings, while the 4-5 Bisons are in seventh place.

The WolfPack and Bisons will rematch at the TCC this evening for their final games of the first half of the Canada West season. The women will play at 3:00 p.m. followed by the men at 4:45 p.m.
