Drax pellet plant in Williams Lake to cease operations by end of 2025

WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — The pellet plant in Williams Lake is set to close by the end of this year, according to a news release issued by Drax, the energy company that operates the facility.

In a statement distributed on Wednesday (Nov. 26), Drax says the curtailment and closures of neighbouring sawmills, and losing the bid of key local supply have resulted in a large drop in fibre availability. The company states this has made continuing operations at the plant no longer commercially viable.

The company describes the decision as ‘weighing heavily’ on them, and expects to cease operations after fibre availability runs out at the site by the end of 2025.

The move to shut down the plant will impact 30 employees. Drax says there will be severance packages and wellbeing support, and staff are also being encouraged to apply to job openings at other sites.
