KAMLOOPS — The TRU WolfPack women’s basketball team have won their third game of the season for the first time since the 2019-20 season.

Five different players hit double-digits on Saturday (Nov. 22) night as the WolfPack beat the Victoria Vikes 68-64 at the TCC. Victoria led 36-28 at the half, but TRU used a 16-7 run in the third quarter, and a 9-4 run late in the fourth to see out the win.

“Victoria is a quality team, ” WolfPack associate head coach Joe Davis said.

“Our team played really hard, they handled the ball really well in the second half – we had only three turnovers in the second half – and that leads to winning behaviours so I’m happy for our team.”

Hailey Merrigan led the way with 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals as the WolfPack put up a season-high 68 points.

Kylee Koppes added 14 points, Olena Vasylenko had 13 points and four assists, Morgan Eichenberger tallied 11 points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocks, while Micah Ramsay continued her hot weekend with ten points and six rebounds.

This is TRU’s first win over Victoria since February, 2015. They’re now 3-6 this season, and are tied with the Fraser Valley Cascades for the fifth and final playoff position in the Canada West Pacific Division.

Following their 7-13 finish in the 2019-20 season, the TRU women went a combined 6-72 over the past four seasons (1-17, 2-18, 2-18, and 1-19). Since 2018-19, the WolfPack had gone 17-101 with three head coaches and two interim bench bosses during that period.

In men’s action, the defending national champion Victoria Vikes came out on top for the second night in a row, as they handed TRU a 90-74 loss at the TCC.

Victoria took an early lead and added to it in the second quarter as they lead 48-34 at half time. The WolfPack cut the deficit to six points with less than two minutes to play, but the Victoria scored 11 of the next 13 points to close out the win.

Steve Stinson and Jayden Stephens led the way offensively for the Wolfpack, with 18 and 17 points respectively. Stephens also had eight rebounds. Dami Farinloye (11) and Jaeden Bynoe (10) also finished with double digit point totals Saturday night.

The WolfPack and Vikes are tied with 7-2 records for first place in the Canada West Pacific Division.

TRU will hit the road for a pair of games against the Fraser Valley Cascades in Abbotsford this weekend. They’ll then close out the first half of the Canada West season the following Friday (Dec. 5) at home against the UNBC Timberwolves.
