KAMLOOPS — Cason Scott continues to impress during his rookie season with the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) men’s basketball team.

The Westsyde Secondary graduate set a new WolfPack single-game rookie scoring record with 28 points Saturday (Nov. 15) night, as TRU beat the Trinity Western Spartans 81-66 to extend their season-opening win streak to a program-best seven games.

Scott, who had twice as many points as any other player, also grabbed a career-best eight rebounds for the WolfPack as he made his first start of the season.

“We know that Cason is a special player and he can do so many things out there for us,” WolfPack head coach Chad Jacobson said. “He just is a confident player and is getting better every time he steps on the floor.”

“As good as he was, it really was a collective effort for us. There were a lot of guys that played well and contributed and it showed.”

Jayden Stephens (14), Dami Farinloye (13) and Steve Stinson (10) finished with digit point totals. Fifth-year captain Thomas Olsen grabbed a career high 14 rebounds, and dished out a career-high eight assists Saturday.

“I thought we came out to start the game a little more organized and cohesive as a team on the offensive end of the floor,” Jacobson added. “We got some really good looks, the ball was moving and it always helps when you get some easy ones to start the game.

“I was just really happy with our effort from start to finish.”

The 7-0 WolfPack remain atop the Canada West standings. They join Western University (8-0) and Bishop’s University (3-0) as the only teams in U SPORTS without a loss this season.

Bishop’s from Sherbrooke in Quebec was the top-ranked team in the country going into this weekend’s games, while Western from London, Ontario, was ranked third. TRU was ranked 17th.

In women’s basketball action, first-year point guard Olena Vasylenko set a new career-high with 21 points but the WolfPack fell 67-44 to the Spartans.

Kyle Koppes added nine points while both Morgan Eichenberger and Hailey Merrigan recorded 10 rebounds each for the 2-6 WolfPack.

The WolfPack teams will remain at home next weekend for a pair of games against the University of Victoria Vikes. The UVic men are reigning national champions and they’re ranked second in the nation.

Friday’s (Nov. 21) action at the TCC will begin with the women’s game at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men at 7:30 p.m.
