KAMLOOPS — The Thompson Rivers University (TRU) WolfPack men’s basketball team is 6-0 for the first time in Canada West history.

On Westsyde night at the Tournament Capital Centre, the WolfPack beat the Trinity Western (TWU) Spartans 70-51 to eclipse the 5-0 start set by the 2015-16 WolfPack. The 15-16 team finished the season with a 16-4 record and a Canada West silver medal.

“We just have a group of guys that are extremely competitive, that want to win, want to play the right way and play for each other,” WolfPack head coach Chad Jacobson said post-game.

“I don’t think it matters to our guys who is on the floor or who is scoring, we just want to win.”

Jayden Stephens led the way for the WolfPack with 22 points Friday (Nov. 14) night, while Westsyde grad Cason Scott – one of the best basketball players in the country in his age group – chipped in with a career-high 18 points and a team-leading seven rebounds.

“It was a big night for a Westsyde kid on Westsyde night, it’s great to see,” Jacobson added. “Cason is special, we knew that we got a special one when we landed him and I thought he did a really good job of just letting the game come to him.”

“I thought he did a good job of that and when the opportunities came, he took advantage.”

Fellow Westsyde grad Caleb Gremaud, a second-year forward who plays for the 2-5 Spartans, had two points and five rebounds Friday.

While the Spartans led 19-15 after one quarter, the WolfPack dominated the second as they put up 22 points to TWU’s nine. TRU led 37-28 at the half, and they outscored the Spartans in the final two quarters to coast to victory.

The WolfPack are the only unbeaten team in Canada West and they sit atop the Canada West Pacific Division. They join Western University (7-0) and Bishop’s University (2-0) as the only teams in U SPORTS without a loss this season.

“When we get a crowd that comes out and supports our student-athletes and our program the way that they did tonight it just means so much,” Jacobson added as the WolfPack finally played their home opener after five consecutive games on the road.

“The guys feed off the energy and just a huge shout out to all our fans and supporters that came out tonight.”

In women’s basketball action, the TRU WolfPack were beaten 64-37 by the Spartans in their home opener Friday.

Kylee Koppes led the way for TRU with 13 points while Kamloopsian Morgan Eichenberger tallied ten points and 15 rebounds for her third-straight double-double.

The WolfPack led 11-9 after one quarter, but the Spartans poured in 27 points in the second to TRU’s 13 to lead 36-24 at the half. The Spartans then outscored TRU in the final two quarters to improve to 5-2.

TRU is 2-4 and they’re in fifth place in the Canada West Pacific Division.

These two teams will rematch at the TCC this evening – with the women’s game scheduled for 4:00 p.m. followed by the men at 6:00 p.m.
