September 27, 1930 — November 3, 2025
Lyn, 95, passed away peacefully in hospital near her North Saanich home with her family beside her.
She grew up on an Alberta farm with her siblings, Eleanor and Danny, where their parents, Howard and Mabel MacDermid, placed great value on learning. Each school day began with a horseback ride to Morning Glory Elementary. She later attended boarding school in Drumheller and then, at the University of Alberta, she met Harry, a fellow education student. Harry and Lyn married in 1954 and began their teaching careers in Eckville, where their three children were born.
Most of Lyn’s far-reaching professional life was spent in Kamloops. She taught elementary and later junior high school science and math, earning the respect of generations of students. Lyn was also a counsellor and found her most rewarding work as a hospital homebound teacher, bringing education and encouragement to children unable to attend school. The family’s summer home at Little Shuswap Lake was a fondly remembered gathering place for lively family visits with relatives arriving from Alberta, BC and Oregon year after year.
After retiring, Lyn and Harry moved to the Saanich Peninsula. They travelled widely, visited family and friends, and loved being grandparents. After Harry’s death in 2003, Lyn continued to travel, remained actively engaged with the people she cared about, and volunteered for civic causes. She was a keen gardener, transforming the yard at the house she and Harry built. In later years, Lyn shared a close friendship with Jeff Phillips (predeceased), providing mutual support.
Lyn was relied upon by her family for her solid judgement, steadiness and quiet resolve. She leaves her children Brent (Nancy), Gregg (Kathy), and Joni Borges (Lionel), grandchildren Brad Densmore, Spencer Densmore, Shannon Boland (Francois), Damian Borges and Daniel Borges (Julia), and great grandchildren Hazel and Lillian Boland. She remained closely connected to her siblings Eleanor Montgomery (Hugh predeceased) and Danny MacDermid (Muriel).
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital.
