EDMONTON — A winning weekend for the TRU WolfPack volleyball teams in the Alberta capital.

The TRU women’s team improved to 2-0 as they beat the MacEwan Griffins in straight sets once again. The WolfPack took the Saturday (Oct. 25) rematch by a 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-22) scoreline.

Third-year outsides Hail Ward, from Kamloops, and Keira Gent led the WolfPack in Edmonton. Ward finished with 12 kills on just 22 attacks, with a game-high seven blocks. Gent added 10 kills, a trio of solo blocks and nine digs.

Fifth-year middle Faith Christensen also had seven kills on 12 swings and six blocks in first taste of game action this season.

“Obviously happen with the weekend result, it’s never easy to win twice on the road,” WolfPack head coach Chad Grimm said. “I thought the girls came out with a good level of focus and intensity and followed the game plan quite well for the most part.”

Elsewhere, the WolfPack men dug themselves out of a 2-1 deficit to beat the Griffins in five sets. They’re now 2-2 on the season after the 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 23-25, 25-14, 15-7) win.

Alex Howard, a South Kamloops Secondary grad, led the WolfPack with 20 kills and just three attacking errors, while Rylan Ibbetson had eight kills and four aces in his season debut. Walker Sodaro chipped in with 39 assists, nine blocks and ten digs.

“It was a great comeback on the road,” WolfPack head coach Pat Hennelly said. “Alex Howard had a game and it was nice to have our captain Rylan Ibbetson back. Parker Bailey was efficient and provided a spark in the fourth and fifth sets.”

The WolfPack volleyball teams will return to Kamloops to prepare for their home opener against the Saskatchewan Huskies this weekend. (Oct. 31 and Nov. 1) Friday’s game action gets underway at 5:30 p.m., while Saturday’s games get undewy at 3:00 p.m.
