KAMLOOPS — A young Kamloops woman whose fundraising efforts have centred around holiday cheer is entering the realm of ghostly fear.

Cassie McNutt’s family home at 5215 Dallas Dr., which has traditionally been decked out with thousands of Christmas lights, will be covered with Halloween decorations to raise money for Cassie’s Charity and Student Achievement Fund.

Visitors are encouraged to stop by on Halloween next Friday (Oct. 31) to enjoy the frightful sights and make a donation to the fund, which will go towards a scholarship for Kamloops-Thompson School District students who want to give back to their community.

A costume contest will take place between 5:45 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. that evening, and the winner will take home a gift certificate for an extra large pizza at Fresh Slice in Aberdeen Mall.

Additionally, anyone who donates until Nov. 14 will also have their name entered into a draw for a one-night stay for two adults and two children at the Thompson Hotel in Kamloops with a movie in the theatre room.

“Halloween has always been one of my favourite times of year,” McNutt said in a news release issued Thursday (Oct. 23). “It’s a chance to have fun, connect with our neighbours, and now, make a difference too. I love that something as simple as decorating our house can help support students who care about their community — just like so many people have supported me.”

In June, McNutt told CFJC Today that she was hoping to raise $10,000 towards the endowment fund with the support of the BC Interior Community Foundation, which then be used to award a $500 scholarship to one Grade 12 student each year.

McNutt’s efforts with Cassie’s Charity Drive – which she began seven years ago when she was 12 – led to her being named one of the youngest recipients of the King Charles III Coronation Medal. The annual light up in Dallas has raised more than $260,000 for the Kamloops Hospice Association in the past four years.

Donations for Cassie’s Charity and Student Achievement Fund can be made online or in person at the BC Interior Community Foundation office at 219 Victoria St. in downtown Kamloops.
