CRD director and former Quesnel mayor passes away

QUESNEL, B.C. — Residents in Quesnel and throughout the Cariboo are mourning the passing of Mary Sjostrom.

At the time of her death, Sjostrom was the Electoral Area A director in the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) and a former mayor and city councillor in Quesnel.

A statement from the CRD notes that she was known for her decades of public service and her commitment to improving the quality of life in the Cariboo region.

Sjostrom was the first female mayor for the City of Quesnel was also president of the Union of BC Municipalities from 2012-2013.

“Mary was an extraordinary leader whose dedication to her community inspired everyone who had the privilege of working with her,” CRD Board Chair Margo Wagner said. “Her legacy of compassion, strength, and service will be remembered across the region. On behalf of the CRD Board and staff, we extend our deepest condolences to Mary’s family and loved ones.”

She reportedly passed away suddenly on Tuesday (Oct. 14) morning. Information regarding a public service will be shared when available.
