KAMLOOPS — The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) will be hosting free chipping day events in a pair of Kamloops-area communities in the Kamloops-area on Monday (Oct. 27) next week.

Residents in Lac Le Jeune and Walloper Lake will be able to participate in the event that the TNRD says helps mitigate the risks of wildfire by reducing wildfire fuels on properties.

“Residents are encouraged to clear out brush, branches, deadfall, and trimmings. Brush must be clean and free of dirt and rocks, and woody debris must be no larger than approximately five inches in diameter,” the TNRD said in a statement.

“Residents are asked to place debris at the end of their driveway the night before pickup. For easy pickup, residents should stack wood and have butt ends facing the road.”

These chipping day events are funded through the TNRD’s FireSmart program, which in turn is funded by grants. Community groups interested in hosting a chipping day event are being told to contact the TNRD’s FireSmart staff by phone at 250-377-6326 or by email.

Several other communities have hosted free chipping days earlier this year including Blackpool, East Barriere Lake, Neskonlith Lake, Knouff Lake, Heffley Lake, Brookmere, Rivershore Estates and Paul Lake.

“On top of free chipping days, the TNRD FireSmart program offers several incentives for Electoral Area homeowners, including year-round free home assessments, and rebates of up to $500 or $750 for fire mitigation work until Nov. 30.”
