KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Airport (YKA) is a reporting a slight decline in summer passenger numbers this year.

New data released by Kamloops Airport Friday (Oct. 17) shows there were 68,960 passengers during the months of July, August and September — a 2.4 per cent decrease from the 70,638 passengers during the same three month period last year.

There were 22,117 passengers in July, 23,441 passengers in August and 23,402 passengers in September. While year-over-year numbers for August and September were down 0.6 per cent and 1.2 per cent respectively, July numbers were down 5.6 per cent.

“The year-over-year decrease in passenger volumes during the first half of the year was anticipated in our forecast, reflecting planned reductions in route frequencies through June,” YKA Managing Director Jim Moroz said in a statement.

“Daily commercial flight activity rebounded to near last year’s levels in July.”

Through nine months of this year, there have been 213,862 passengers at Kamloops Airport. That’s down 20,265 passengers, or about 8.6 per cent from the 233,974 passengers seen through to the end of September 2024.

At current levels, Kamloops Airport will reach around 285,000 passengers this year, well short of the 310,507 passengers seen just last year.

Moroz said while overall passenger volumes “held steady” in the third quarter, he said the trend is moving “in a positive direction” going into the final three months of the year.

“The additional summer service to Edmonton with WestJet in July and August was encouraging,” Moroz added.

“We remain committed to working closely with all our airline partners to increase frequencies on existing routes and explore sustainable new air service opportunities for our region.”

Work is currently underway to try and better promote the Kamloops region in the hopes of seeing better usage — and potentially more flights — at Fulton Field.
