COLLINS: Trust me, right? Don’t think so.

I HAVE OFTEN been accused of being too trusting. Looking back, I think that’s true. I have always had an unfailing habit of believing in the best of people. I don’t think that was a bad decision. I have been let down many times, and I know I have also let others down — people who put their faith in me.

Trust is a fleeting gesture. You gain someone’s trust in a heartbeat. You can lose it just as quickly. I have always felt that taking the high road was the best and I have let that philosophy lead me into a pretty good life. I have made many lifelong friends. We have been there for each other through good times and bad. Some of those times were pretty hard. Some were a lot of fun.

During all those times, there was a core group we could count on to have their shoulder to cry on, to go over to their house and take on a chore or two to help take the load off.

But I fear that the word’s meaning has dimmed a bit. Sometimes these days, it almost rings hollow. Much of this change, unfortunately, has been driven by political leaders. Donald Trump has done more to tear the world apart than any leader in recent memory. No one trusts him and he trusts no one. And that sense of mistrust — or misplaced trust, if you will — is slowly being eroded.
