KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops has officially opened a new mini ice rink in the space that used to be occupied by the McArthur Island Curling Club.

Sherri Holmes, the city’s sport, recreation and wellness manager, told CFJC that the space will help alleviate some of the demand for ice time in Kamloops.

“This is a space now that can be used by Kamloops Minor Hockey for their U7 and U9 players by aligning with Hockey Canada’s best practices,” Holmes said. “We also have some time set aside for public skating on the North Shore, and then it also helps to free up space for our other user groups.”

The City announced plans for this mini-rink in May as the McArthur Island Curling Club vacated the space, after it relocated to share space at the Kamloops Curling Club downtown.

“That provided us with the opportunity to turn that space into this mini-rink,” Holmes added. “Over the last four months or so our civic operations team and our capital projects team have been working to make that happen.”

“We want to make sure we keep our athletes and families here so they can play hockey and skate. We’re tyring to make sure we’re meeting the demand of the community.”

A grand opening ceremony was held this past Thursday (Oct. 9) evening, featuring dignitaries and residents.

“Lots of families and young king were skating, so it was absolutely wonderful,” Holmes added. “This space allows our full-sized rinks to be used by our older athletes and hockey players, which is great as well.”

This mini-rink is part of the Build Kamloops initiative, which will also see the city build a new four-sheet arena multiplex in Dufferin by the end of this decade.

“The arena multiplex will be entering the validation stage this fall, and we’re very excited for that but it is still several years away,” Holmes said. “We also have our Riverside Park outdoor skating facility that will be coming online this winter.”

“[While there is a charge to skate on the mini-rink, the Riverside rink] will be a free space for public skating with no sticks or pucks.”

At this time, public skating at the mini- rink will be held between 2:45 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and between 2:15 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
