KAMLOOPS – Western Canada Theatre (WCT) will open its 50th season with a comedic play based on the Red River Resistance called Women of the Fur Trade.

This show officially runs from Oct. 10 to 19 at the Sagebrush Theatre, though the first show was held on Preview Thursday (Oct. 9)

“Every single show on our stage this year is a Canadian story by Canadian writers, Canadian creators, Canadian designers,” Kelli Fox, Western Canada Theatre’s Artistic Director, said. “The thread that runs through them will show us, just a kind of glorious view of the wide spectrum of what Canadian culture, quote unquote, is.”

Fox says Women of the Fur Trade is a comedic and satirical look at an important event in Canadian history.

“I mean, who doesn’t love a laugh? It’s the funniest, most inventive, satirical, fast-paced version of Canadian history you’ll ever see,” Fox added. “It’s fantastic. It’s going to be a little bit controversial, but it’s going to be full of joy and laughs.”

The show switches between modern-day and 19th-century language, slapstick comedy, and fourth-wall breaks.

“It truly is such a kind of unexpected turning on its head of a piece of Canadian history that we, most of us, studied in school and think we know something about. It’s told with the voices of three women who history is acted upon rather than the people who enact or write history,” said Fox.

This is the first show for Fox, who took over as Western Canada Theatre’s artistic director in June, and she hopes everyone who comes enjoys the show.

“It feels so exciting. It could be pretty pressure-filled, except that everybody else here has been here for a long time, and they know what they’re doing, and they’ve been through this process,” Fox said.

“I’m kind of tagging along, trying to keep up and enjoying the ride. It’s going to be a really exciting opening.”
