KAMLOOPS — Interior Health (IH) has appointed Sylvia Weir as its new President and CEO following “an extensive search” for a new leader that began earlier this summer.

Weir, who was the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Vice President of Corporate Services, was serving as interim President and CEO after Susan Brown stepped down in June.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve IH in this role permanently and lead an organization that is comprised of dedicated, compassionate and talented people committed to supporting the health and wellbeing for all,” Weir said, in a statement.

In a news release Thursday (Oct. 9), Weir said that since June she has had “the honour and privilege” to meet with staff and community leaders across the health authority.

“I am acutely aware of the challenges we collectively face both at IH and as a broader health-care sector, but I am confident through our continued focus on engagement, innovation, strategic partnerships and financial sustainability we will be able to maintain our commitment to delivering the highest quality and most effective care possible to communities,” she added.

According to Weir’s LinkedIn profile, she has been with Interior Health since 2008, and had been serving as CFO since 2020.

Weir brings more than 25 years of experience in health care in both Canada and the United Kingdom to the table as well as a “strong commitment to compassionate leadership.”

According to Interior Health, Weir’s leadership has laid the foundation to better support positive working relationships with employees and medical staff as well as key government leaders and external partners.

It also notes Weir has demonstrated her deep commitment to advancing reconciliation and working collaboratively with community partners by building strong relationships.

“As we considered a full slate of candidates, it became clear that Sylvia brings the right mix of values-based leadership, vision and financial acumen to enable the efficient and effective delivery of front-line clinical services to support the achievement of IH’s vision,” Dr. Robert Halpenny, chair of the IH Board of Directors, added in a statement.

In addition to her role at Interior Health, Weir has been a Board member of the Kelowna Women’s Shelter for the past seven years and a current board member of the provincial Healthcare Benefit Trust.

Based in Kelowna, Weir is also an Immigrant Employment Mentor with the Kelowna Community Resources Centre.
