TK’EMLUPS — Tkʼemlúps te Secwépemc is hosting a local event Tuesday (Sept. 30) for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This year’s gathering is organized in conjunction with the City of Kamloops. Tuesday will feature traditional singing and dancing, cultural learning activities, education booths, food and an Orange Shirt Day Walk along the Moccasin Mile route around the powwow grounds.

“Honour the survivors, take a Moccasin Mile walk, but also to share in the resilience through stories and through firsthand dialogue sessions with some of our survivors. But it’s also an opportunity to bring families together in a good, positive, meaningful way.”

Kukpi7 Rosanne Casimir says the National Day is a time of reflection and, on a local level, it’s meant to acknowledge the resilience of people who survived harm in the residential school system, remember children who did not come home and highlight Indigenous history.
