KAMLOOPS – Although the Kamloops Blazers came away with four points against the Seattle Thunderbirds last weekend, it didn’t come without some unfortunate news as the team lost two impact players to injuries.

Head Coach Shaun Clouston confirmed Monday that 20-year-old defenceman Rhett Ravndahl will be out long term with a knee injury suffered in Friday’s 4-3 win. Import forward Vit Zahejsky, who was stretchered off the ice Friday after taking a hit from Seattle’s Kaleb Hartmann, is also expected to miss 4-6 months after successful surgery on Sunday.

If there is a positive for this Blazers team, it’s the goal-scoring. The team shows no lack of offence, finding the back of the net 16 times over its first three games.

“Yeah, it’s great,” says forward Nathan Behm, who scored three goals in his return to the lineup. “I think there’s a lot of good contribution from lots of guys, as well. There’s a lot of depth scoring as well as top guys scoring, so I think that’s a good sign for the year.”

Leading the way offensively for Kamloops is J.P. Hurlbert, who was named WHL Player of the Week on Monday after his six-point weekend against the Thunderbirds. He leads the league in goals (6) and points.(9)

Also earning hardware this past weekend is goalie Logan Edmonstone. He recorded his first career shutout on Saturday night, helping the Blazers to a 6-0 victory and earning himself WHL Goaltender of the Week.

“It’s a good feeling,” says Edmonstone. “The boys really battled hard all night. They made it easy for me for the most part, and I had to make a couple of nice saves. But you know, it was just good taking it day by day.”

The Blazers are a perfect 3-0 to start the year and one of three WHL teams that remain undefeated. Kamloops will now hit the road for the first time this season when they travel to Seattle for a third consecutive game against the Thunderbirds Friday (Oct. 3).
