50-unit temporary housing project to rise in Kamloops’ McGill industrial corridor

KAMLOOPS — The province is partnering with the City of Kamloops to build modular, temporary housing near the Thompson Rivers University campus.

In a news release issued Monday afternoon (Sept. 29), Minister of Housing Christine Boyle says the housing unit will cater to those experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

The more-than-50-unit facility will be built at 1453 McGill Road, next to Bunker Road and Truck Chilling Park. Boyle says six of the units will be meant to house couples. The facility will offer a shared dining space, an outdoor area for gathering, kitchen, shower, washroom and laundry services.

The City of Kamloops is contributing the land for the housing project, while the province funds its capital and operating costs through the Homeless Encampment Action Response Temporary Housing (HEARTH) program.

The housing facility will be operated by the Canadian Mental Health Association Kamloops (CMHA Kamloops). The province says CMHA staff will be on site at all times and will provide residents with meals, life-skills training and connections to community services.

“Throughout B.C., we’re bringing people indoors so they have a safe place to stay with access to services that can help them stabilize their lives,” said Boyle. “Sheltering outside or in encampments isn’t safe for anyone, and we’re working with the City of Kamloops to meet the urgent need for more housing supports that will help build a stronger community for everyone.”

“This is a vital housing project that will provide much-needed stability and dignity for people in our community who need housing and supports at this point in their lives,” added Councillor Kelly Hall, who is serving as Kamloops’ deputy mayor for September. “We are committed to working collaboratively with community partners to ensure everyone in Kamloops has access to safe and supportive housing.”

Construction is set to begin before the end of 2025 and be ready to open next year.

The province says an information session for neighbouring business owners will be held next Monday, October 6 at the Ramada hotel in Kamloops from 5 to 7 p.m.

Further details on the information session were not immediately available.
