KAMLOOPS – Harris Hunter of the Kamloops Canoe and Kayak Club was named a finalist this week in the RBC Training Ground. The competition is a nation-wide talent identification and athlete-funding program dedicated to finding and supporting the next generation of Canadian Olympians.

Hunter was among more than 2,500 athletes (aged 14-25) who participated in free local qualifier events across the country this year. Athletes took part in core speed, strength, power and endurance tests in front of Olympic talent scouts.

The top 100 of the group will now compete in the RBC Training Ground national final on November 1 in Vancouver. The 18-year-old Hunter hopes to be one of 35 athletes deemed to have great Olympic potential, to earn funding, a spot in the national development program and an accelerated path to the Olympics.

Hunter is no stranger to performing well on the big stage. He earned a gold medal earlier this year at the Canoe Kayak Canada Sprint National Championships when he placed first in the under-18 men’s one-person kayak 200-metre event.
