KAMLOOPS — Police in Kamloops are asking people to be mindful of online fraudsters as instances of online scams continue to be reported to the RCMP.

Police say in one recent instance from Aug. 22 this year, a person unknowingly provided their personal details to a fake banking webpage after they clicked on a link while trying to sell an item online.

In a news release Friday (Sept. 19), police say that the victim was later called and told to place their bank cards in a mailbox by someone who said that a fraud had taken place. Police say those cards were collected and used shortly after.

“As part of the investigation video footage of the alleged suspect was obtained,” Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dana Napier said. “In order to advance the investigation, we are releasing an image of the suspect with the hopes to identify him.”

Napier said Kamloops RCMP want to remind people to do their banking in person and that banks do not use couriers to collect bank cards or other personal information. Police also say to remain vigilant online and to refrain from sharing personal or banking information.

People who think they are – or know someone who has been a victim of fraud – are being urged to report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or by phone at 1-888-495-8501.

Those with information out this particular incident are also urged to call the Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 and cite file 2025-27710.
