KAMLOOPS — Staff and volunteers for the Kamloops Food Bank will be up early Friday morning (Sept. 12) for this year’s drive-thru breakfast in support of the Starfish Backpack program.

Starfish Backpacks is a food bank program that provides weekend meals and snacks for students in the Kamloops-Thompson School District. Bags are packed with food and sent home with students on Fridays through the school year. Friday’s event in Kamloops will mark the seventh year for the pop-up drive-thru.

“The funds we receive from the breakfast tomorrow go toward supporting our Starfish Backpack program,” explains Kamloops Food Bank executive director Bernadette Siracky. “That program has grown over the years. It started with Rotary and ourselves. It has grown to 275 backpacks that we give out every Friday to students in SD73 who have been identified as not having enough food for the weekend when they go home.”

More often than not, food bank events are focused on collecting non-perishable donations, but this drive-thru breakfast event is focused on fundraising for cash and monetary donations so the non-profit can go out and purchase food for the program throughout the rest of the school year.

“Every wrap is 15 dollars as you come through and you can go on EventBrite and order it prior so you can order many for the office and you can come in with you know, 20 wraps for everybody,” adds Siracky.

Those wanting to support the food bank and grab a quick breakfast on-the-go are encouraged to drive through the Cascades Casino parking lot in Dufferin on Friday morning sometime between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.
