WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — A campfire ban for the Cariboo Fire Centre has been extended.

The BC Wildfire Service says the prohibition will remain in effect until Sept. 30, or until the order is rescinded, rather than the initial estimated lifting at 12:00 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 11).

In an update Wednesday, the wildfire service reminds residents that Category 2 and 3 open fires remain prohibited until Oct. 31, 2025, or until the order is rescinded.

The campfire ban for the Cariboo came in effect on Aug. 28, much later in the year than usual.

A campfire is defined as a fire that is no larger than 0.5 metres high by 0.5 metres wide which is used by any person for recreational purposes or by a First Nation for a ceremonial purpose.

The fire danger rating for the Cariboo Fire Centre mostly ranks high.

Elsewhere, a campfire prohibition in the Kamloops Fire Centre remains in effect until Oct. 17, or until it is rescinded.
