Tkemlups te Secwépemc supporting evacuees as wildfires burn in the Cariboo-Chilcotin

KAMLOOPS — Tkemlúps te Secwépemc says it is extending its support to evacuees from the Ulkatcho First Nation who have been displaced by wildfire.

In a statement, it said a group of Elders and community members arrived in Kamloops on Thursday (Sept. 4) evening, and that they’re being accommodated at a local hotel.

“It is a Secwépemc teaching to care for those who come to our lands in times of need,” Tkemlups Kukpi7 Rosanne Casimir said.

Casimir said the Tkemlúps te Secwépemc Emergency Planning team is working closely with the City of Kamloops and other partner agencies to ensure that all evacuees are welcomed and supported.

The Ulkatcho First Nation and the Cariboo Regional District issued evacuation orders early Friday (Sept. 5) morning due to the threat of two encroaching wildfires. The Beef Trail Creek wildfire is estimated to be 102 square kilometres in size, while the Dusty Lake wildfire is around 53 square kilometres in size.

The Tsilhqot’in Nation and the Cariboo Regional District also issued an evacuation alert for the Tatla Area North and South area Friday evening because of the 3.8 square kilometre Taccatolie Creek wildfire, which is burning along Highway 20.

While the majority of evacuees from Ulkatcho are being directed to Williams Lake and Prince George, Casimir said Tkemlups will be ready to accommodate any evacuees who may arrive in Kamloops.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted by the wildfires,” she said.

According to the BC Wildfire Service, there are 29 active wildfires burning in the Cariboo Fire Centre, 17 of which are out of control. There are 144 total active fires across B.C., with 53 considered out of control.
