KAMLOOPS — Sawyer Mynio was selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the third round of the 2023 NHL Draft.

The defenceman from Kamloops is eligible to return to the Calgary Hitmen for his 20-year-old WHL campaign, but intends to make the jump to professional hockey this season.

“Abbotsford [Canucks in the AHL] is the place to start and just work my way up from there,” said Mynio, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound, left-shot defenceman.

“Hopefully, play some NHL games this year and if not it’s something to work toward for the year after that.”

Mynio plans to practise and undergo fitness testing later this month in Abbotsford before joining the Vancouver Canucks for two prospects showcase games against the Kraken in Seattle.

He was asked which areas of his game he aims to improve this season.

“The physicality side of my game and the strength,” said Mynio, who was traded to the Hitmen from the Seattle Thunderbirds in January prior to the WHL trade deadline.

“I’m a kind of an undersized D-man in today’s game, but my speed is the thing that can help me out, and making plays.”

Mynio is scheduled to participate in Vancouver Canucks’ training camp, which gets underway on Sept. 18 in Penticton.
