TRU WolfPack reflect on mixed results after opening soccer season on the road

KAMLOOPS – After prepping throughout last week, the TRU WolfPack traveled up to Prince George to take on the UNBC Timberwolves, looking to get their seasons off on the right foot.

The women’s soccer team started its campaign off with a bang on Friday (Aug. 22). They got goals from three first-year players and Esi Lufo netted a pair of her own as the WolfPack started the season with a 5-0 victory. Lufo scored the lone goal on Sunday, while goalkeeper Floor Ursem recorded her second consecutive shutout, in a 1-0 victory. The WolfPack with a perfect start to the year.

“I think we had a really strong preseason in our games and then during the game, we found our way around the net,” said fifth-year player Katie Chun. “A bunch of rookies got goals, which was really great. They’re coming out really strong and, obviously, a shutout, too, for our rookie goalkeeper, Floor, was an awesome start to the season. We’re at the top of the table right now, which is pretty awesome, but we just have to keep our heads down, look to keep getting wins and stay at the top of the table.”

The men also started their season at UNBC. After potting the first goal of the season just seven minutes in, it was a tough time the rest of the way as they conceded two goals to end the first half. That would be enough for a UNBC 2-1 victory.

Sunday saw TRU fall behind 2-0 before Lachlan Will potted his first goal of the season. It wasn’t enough as the Timberwolves would take another 2-1 victory. Despite the losses, the men still believe that this team can make some noise in Canada West.

“That was definitely a tough one. The boys went into the weekend really up for it,” said second-year player Aren Christianson. “I think we’re expecting a lot this season because we do have a good group of guys who are willing to work for each other. Just a few unlucky bounces and we’re on the losing end of it. We just have to know, it’s the first two games of our season, right? It’s the first two games where our team has really been able to come together and we have the full roster.

“But at the end of the day, it’s just two games. We have 14 more to go and the boys know what could have gone well this weekend. We know what went wrong, so it’ll just be an all mental thing coming back from this.”

Both teams return for their home openers this weekend as they welcome the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday night. Then the UVIC Vikes come to town on Saturday. Both of those games are at Hillside Stadium.
