Kamloops transit fares to increase on Labour Day as BC Transit rolls out service expansions

KAMLOOPS — BC Transit is reminding users of public transit in Kamloops that bus fares will be increasing next month.

Starting Labour Day Monday (Sept. 1), it will cost $2.25 for a single ride and $4.50 for a day pass, up from $2 and $4 respectively. Monthly adult and concession passes will also cost $55 and $35 respectively, up from $50 and $30.

“This fare change is the result of a City of Kamloops fare review that was approved by Kamloops city council in May,” a statement from BC Transit said. “This is the first fare increase since 2011.”

While fares were decreased in 2015, council’s decision will mean the cost of a single fare will increase to $3 in 2029. City staff also said the phased increase will ensure a steady revenue stream, though they noted it will also require consistent communication with transit users.

BC Transit also says there will be an expansion to handyDART service in Kamloops as of Sept. 2 this year. The service will now be available on Sundays from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. BC Transit notes handyDART holiday service will match fixed-route transit service.

“This service expansion has been made possible by an increase in local government and provincial funding,” BC Transit added.

“The operating grant provided in the 2025-26 provincial budget will allow BC Transit and its local government partners to continue to provide safe and reliable service and demonstrates that public transit remains a priority in our communities.”

Another 8,000 hours of added service on bus routes 1, 3 and 7 is expected to take effect in January after it was also approved by the Province. Plans to add 5,800 hours of service towards frequency and span improvements on routes 5, 16 and 17 were not approved.

These service expansions are the first in a series of significant transit improvements over three years that Kamloops council voted in favour of last August. Another sizable funding request is expected to be made to the Province for consideration in the 2026-27 budget.

As is the case every year, BC Transit will also be increasing weekday schedules on bus routes that serve Thompson Rivers University and K–12 schools in Kamloops. Those changes also come into effect on Sept. 2.

“We encourage our customers to use the Umo app, Google Transit or any other app of their choice for real-time bus tracking and planning your next transit journey,” BC Transit said.
