Lytton-area fire eclipses 1,000ha

LYTTON, B.C. — The BC Wildfire Service says the Cantilever Bar wildfire south of Lytton is now more than 1,000 hectares in size.

In an update to its website, the service says the fire — which sparked Monday (July 28) about 10 kilometres south of the community — is now mapped at 1,040 hectares.

The service attributes the new size to growth on Wednesday and more accurate mapping. It notes the fire is largely growing upslope to the west and north.

Firefighters are seeing behaviour between rank 2 and 4, meaning a vigorously spreading surface fire with occasional candling of trees.

The Lytton First Nation ordered the evacuation of two of its reserves Thursday morning, setting up a reception centre at its Battlefield Community Hall. Evacuation alerts remain in place for neighbouring reserves and a few properties within the Thompson Nicola Regional District.
