KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops has launched a new Facebook page that will aim to reunited lost or missing pets that are in the care of Community Services Officers with their owners.

In a statement, the City said it will share photos and information about animals that are in its custody on the page – City of Kamloops – Lost and Found Animals.

Animals are held for a few days – four days for dogs, two days for cats – to allow their owners to claim them. Once that time has passed, the city said the information will shared on social media to spread the word further.

“If unclaimed, the animal will remain in care for up to one additional week,” the city said. “After that, efforts to reunite the animal with its owner will continue while exploring permanent placement options through adoption or collaboration with rescue facilities.”

In order to claim a pet, the city says people will need to provide proof of ownership and a piece of government-issued photo ID. They’ll also have to pay for a dog licence if the pet is unlicensed, pay all impound and boarding fees, and bring a leash and collar or a pet carrier.

“If you find a lost pet, we ask that efforts be made to find the animal’s owner before calling Community Services,” the city added. “Most lost pets are found very close to home and have a higher likelihood of being reunited with their family if they remain in the neighbourhood.”

That, the city said, could include checking for tags or identification on the pet, asking neighbours if they recognize the animal, posting a photo and location on social media and in neighbourhood forums, or heading to a vet to check if the animal has a microchip.

“If you’re unable to reunite the pet with its owner, contact Community Services or submit a found animal report by phone, email, or online,” the city said.

“If you believe an animal belongs to you, please contact Community Services directly at 250-828-3409 or email communityservices@kamloops.ca as the Facebook page will not be monitored to respond to messages.”
