KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops works with provincial and federal ministers covering portfolios from infrastructure to public safety and of course health.

The minister that Kamloops has perhaps had the best – or at least the most public – working relationship with has been Ravi Kahlon during his time as the Minster of Housing as well as the Minister of Municipal Affairs.

That relationship ended Thursday (July 17) after Kahlon was named the new Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth, a portfolio he previously held from 2020 until 2022.

Kahlon has announced numerous housing projects in the city, and he has also tackled a number of wide-ranging issues at city hall.

“I’m sad because we have just a good relationship with Ravi, but he has set in motion a lot of changes that I think the new minister, minister (Christine) Boyle will be able to follow up on,” Deputy Mayor for July Dale Bass said. “And in many ways I think we might be dealing with Minister Kahlon in a different way as he works to grow the economy.”

Kamloops will now have to get up to speed with a new minister and Bass believes it should be an easy transition. She also hopes the new minister will continue with the work started by Kahlon on municipal reforms.

“I think she has to because Kamloops is not unique as there are so many municipalities in B.C. that are faced with challenges within their own council membership,” Bass added.

“The issue here is that the Community Charter was written in a calmer time, in a more pleasant time, when people didn’t feel emboldened to just be angry and demanding based on misinformation. So I think it behooves her to continue the work that has been started.”
